General Summary:
As Manager of the Virtual Compute Infrastructure team, which is part of a globally distributed IT organization you will lead, mentor, and develop a regionally distributed team of IT professionals specializing in virtualization, automation, and Windows server infrastructure. This team collaborates closely with IT and business stakeholders across multiple regions and time zones. Your primary mission is to foster a culture of continuous learning, growth, and collaboration, while driving the team’s performance through KPIs and metrics related to system performance and capacity planning. You will leverage your expert-level knowledge of VMware or Hyper-V, strong Windows Server expertise, and champion infrastructure automation and system architecture to guide technical strategy, ensure operational excellence, and support the professional development of the team.
*Please note this role will require 5 days per week onsite in our Cork office*
Lead a team of IT engineers of various levels who are responsible for end-to-end architecture of Virtual Server platforms including reference architecture, automation, and development of standard operation procedures covering all aspects of a virtual environment stack.
Partner with peer IT technical groups to gather business requirements and translate those into action plans for virtual deployments.
Set, track, and document clear environmental KPIs and metrics focused on system performance (e.g., uptime, latency, resource utilization) and capacity planning (e.g., scalability, resource forecasting, usage trends).
Use data-driven insights from performance, capacity, and automation metrics to identify opportunities for improvement and address any performance gaps.
Perform a central role in team’s efforts in infrastructure automation. Driving the adoption of automation tools and practices (e.g., PowerCLI, PowerShell, Ansible, vROPs, scripting) to improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability of VDI and cloud operations.
Lead architecture reviews and design decisions for VMware Horizon/vSphere or Hyper-V, Windows Server services (AD DS, DNS/DHCP, GPO), profile management, image lifecycle, and app delivery.
Collaborate with network, storage, security, teams on capacity models, redundancy strategies, disaster recovery (RPO/RTO), and cost optimization.
Facilitate ongoing, open communication—helping employees understand team strategy, business objectives, and how their work contributes to organizational success.
Recognize and celebrate accomplishments, fostering an environment where contributions are valued and growth is encouraged.
Lead the team in the design, implementation, and optimization of VDI and cloud solutions, ensuring technical excellence and operational reliability.
Serve as the subject matter expert for VMware (vSphere, Horizon, vROPs, etc.) or Hyper-V, providing technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and best practices for security and performance.
Oversee Windows Server platforms (2016/2019/2022): AD DS, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, file/print services, clustering, failover, and patch management—with an emphasis on performance, security baselining, and modernization.
Guide migration and lifecycle initiatives (e.g., domain/forest upgrades, file server consolidation, certificate services), and ensure compliance with hardening standards.
Encourage knowledge sharing, cross-training, and collaborative problem-solving within the team and across IT functions.
Oversee documentation, process improvement, and the adoption of automation to enhance team efficiency and learning.
Stay current on emerging technologies including AI/ML integration and best practices in IT, automation, and people management, and proactively introduce new ideas to the team.
Minimum Qualifications:
• 7+ years of IT-related work experience with a Bachelor's degree.
OR
9+ years of IT-related work experience without a Bachelor’s degree.
• 4+ years in a leadership role in projects/programs.
Preferred Education and Qualifications
7+ years of experience in IT infrastructure, with at least 3 years in a leadership or people management role.
10+ years’ experience in IT infrastructure without a bachelor’s degree.
