Engineering Group, Engineering Group > Modem Software Engineering
General Summary:
This individual independently plans, performs the moderately-defined responsibility for the design, implementation, verification, validation and commercialization of the Wireless WAN (or cellular) modem software as a product or component within a product. Work involves implementation of a multi-RAT (Radio Access Technology) cellular modem from industry specifications (most notably 3GPP with LTE and 5GNR) and efficient implementation of the shared resources of a multi-RAT modem. Performs detailed analysis of the existing software stack and closely collaborates with other functional groups including modem systems, modem hardware and modem firmware to develop a cost effective, high quality and high capability modem software package which meets industry leading quality metrics and customer requirements with high performance and acceptable cost. Leverages specialization in processor performance and expert modem knowledge (e.g., RF, baseband, signal processing, computer architecture, communication protocols) and methodology to lead a major feature within modem software drive modem architecture forward through major HW/SW features and enhancements within Qualcomm modem. Applies advanced understanding of other teams or domains. Guides junior engineers in design and implementation. Participates in project reviews and project meetings across cross-functional domains to deliver modem products that meet customer needs. Identifies issues or patterns of issues related to software design and the implications for work within team. Makes overall recommendations in software and hardware to address ambiguous or ill-defined issues, design architectures, generate solutions, and develop models, code, and/or simulations. Supports cross-functional efforts across multiple teams at the product level to design products and solutions and drives their implementation, meeting customer requirements and standards. Architects unit test environment to test/verify code or design for the subsystem. Leads others to evaluate the impact of results and validate modem software against specifications. Advises engineers within team and consults for external teams. Reviews test plans. Interprets results and feeds back to cross-functional teams. Leads the integration of modem software into platforms and products. Provides technical expertise to resolve complex systems-level issues during integration and commercialization. Drives cross-functional teams in modem bring-up and resolution of customer/field issues. Implements specialized tools for HW/SW evolution and partitioning, performance characterization, debug, and general profiling. Writes clear and detailed technical documentation and feature descriptions for highly complex or difficult projects to ensure users and/or customers can easily understand content. Acts as a strong contributor at design reviews and project meetings.
